Summary

The Centre Pompidou organizes the first French retrospective dedicated to the Danish artist Sonja Ferlov Mancoba (1911-1984), on the occasion of its entry into the museum's collections with 11 drawings and an emblematic sculpture made over 5 years during the Second World War world.

Description

Modernist sculptor unknown in France, Sonja Ferlov Mancoba comes from the bourgeoisie of Copenhagen where she follows a classical formation in the 20s. Close to the Cobra group, she finds her inspirations in surrealism and primitive art. Settled in Paris in 1936 with the South African artist Ernest Mancoba, she knows a new period of fertile creation from the 60s. She is now very represented in museums.

In total, the exhibition will gather about 60 drawings / collages, preparatory or automatic drawings from the 30s, and 60 sculptures. It will follow that proposed this winter (February-May 2019) by the National Gallery in Copenhagen.
